The Legacy Behind Our Name

John Lewis Invictus Academy was named in honor of the late Congressman John Robert Lewis, a principled civil rights leader and lifelong advocate for equity, equality, justice, and liberation for all people.

Throughout his life, Congressman Lewis demonstrated extraordinary courage, perseverance, and an unwavering commitment to giving a voice to those who were often voiceless. His leadership and statesmanship provided hope and inspiration to individuals and communities who had been marginalized, forgotten, or overlooked. He believed deeply in the power of service, education, and collective action to create meaningful change.

Congressman Lewis faithfully served the people of Georgia’s Fifth Congressional District until his passing on July 17, 2020. His legacy continues to inspire generations to stand for what is right, remain committed to their purpose, and never lose hope in the possibility of a better future.

The word “Invictus,” meaning unconquered, holds a special significance for our school community. Congressman Lewis's favorite poem, Invictus by William Ernest Henley, serves as a powerful reminder of resilience, courage, and the determination to remain steadfast in the face of adversity.

The poem's enduring message reflects the spirit we hope to instill in every Royal Lion: you have the power to shape your future, overcome challenges, and remain the master of your destiny.

As a school community, we strive to embody this legacy so that our students, families, and community can collectively embrace the words:

“I am the master of my fate;
I am the captain of my soul.”
